Port and transit

  • Matadi: the main container port of the DR Congo, on the Congo River. The control services (OCC, border hygiene, animal and plant quarantine) are present there.
  • Access to Kinshasa: about 355 km by National Route 1, or 9 to 11 hours by truck. The Matadi–Kinshasa railway has not run for several years. Inland transport to Kinshasa and clearance are arranged by the importer.
  • Boma: not offered by default. The port handles few containers and has no listed reefer stations.
  • Transit: longer than to Pointe-Noire, as most services tranship. The exact transit is stated in each offer.
  • Incoterms: CFR Matadi by default (we pay the freight; the importer insures the cargo in the DR Congo, as Congolese law requires import cargo insurance with an insurer licensed in the DR Congo). CIF on request, if the importer and its clearing agent confirm it fits. FOB (you arrange the freight) on request.

Documents and controls

  • Health or veterinary certificate from the competent authority of the origin country; the approval number is stated on the health certificate.
  • Certificate of origin, invoice, packing list and bill of lading. The OCC and Customs (DGDA) require documents in French.
  • French labelling: product name, origin, quantity, production or expiry date.
  • Pre-shipment inspection: mandatory for imports above USD 2,500 FOB. The exemption covers only fresh or chilled products: frozen products are inspected. The approved body inspects the goods and supervises loading; its report leads to the Verification Certificate (AV) on the single window. We present the goods at the loading point.
  • FERI (electronic import information note): mandatory for each bill of lading, before the vessel arrives.
  • Temperature recorder on request.
  • Before ordering, the importer registers its import declaration (DIB) through its bank on the single window, obtains the sanitary import authorisation and takes out cargo insurance with an insurer licensed in the DR Congo.
  • On arrival, the OCC controls food products (documents, physical check, sampling). The current inspection contract ends in November 2026 and the single window is changing provider: current requirements are confirmed by the importer and its clearing agent before each loading. We send all documents at loading.

Frequently asked questions

Which frozen products do you offer for the DR Congo?

Fish (horse mackerel, mackerel, tilapia, sardinella, herring, hake), poultry (leg quarters, whole hen, wings, gizzards, paws), pork (feet, breastbones, ears, heads), beef offal (lips, kidneys, liver, tails) and, on request, milk powder.

How do the goods reach Kinshasa?

We deliver to the port of Matadi. Kinshasa is about 355 km away by National Route 1. The importer arranges clearance and reefer transport to Kinshasa. We do not ship to the DR Congo through Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville.

Do you ship to Boma?

Not by default. We quote Matadi, where the control services and reefer facilities are present. Boma is possible only if a carrier confirms a reefer service there.

Why do you quote CFR Matadi and not CIF?

Congolese law requires imported goods to be insured with an insurer licensed in the DR Congo, and the regulator ARCA enforces it. We pay the freight; the importer insures the cargo in the DR Congo. CIF remains possible on request.

Is a pre-shipment inspection required?

Yes, for imports above USD 2,500 FOB. The exemption covers only fresh or chilled products. The approved body inspects the goods and supervises loading; we present the goods to it.

What is the FERI?

The electronic import information note. It is mandatory for each bill of lading to the DR Congo and must be validated before the vessel arrives. We arrange it at loading.

Which documents do you provide?

The origin health certificate, certificate of origin, invoice, packing list and bill of lading, in French. We send them at loading.

What must the importer do before ordering?

Register its import declaration (DIB) through its bank, obtain the sanitary import authorisation and insure the cargo with an insurer licensed in the DR Congo. The current procedure is confirmed by the importer and its clearing agent.

What does "Thomson" mean in Kinshasa markets?

It is the name for frozen horse mackerel of size 20+, sold in 20 kg cartons. Our offers always state the species, Latin name and size.

What is the minimum order?

One full 40ft reefer container. One container can combine several compatible frozen products. For milk powder, the minimum is one 20' dry container.

How long is the transit?

Transit to Matadi usually includes a transhipment. It is longer than to Pointe-Noire and depends on the carrier. The exact transit is stated in each offer.

How are payment terms set?

They are agreed for each contract and stated in the proforma invoice.
