Which SMP grade for which use
There is not one SMP but several grades, defined by heat treatment and quality. Fix the grade before asking for a price: it changes the offer.
- Medium heat, standard grade: the most requested. For repacking into sachets, yoghurt, drinks, ice cream and bakery.
- Low heat: for cheese making and recombined milk where a fresh milk taste matters.
- High heat: for bakery, confectionery and chocolate, where water binding and heat stability matter.
- Extra grade for recombined UHT milk: tighter limits on fat, solubility, scorched particles and bacteria, quoted against the buyer's specification.

Frequently asked questions
What is skimmed milk powder (SMP)?
Pasteurised skimmed milk, spray-dried into a powder with min. 34% protein and max. 1.25% fat. It is used for repacking, yoghurt, drinks, bakery and recombined milk.
Which grade should I choose?
Medium heat standard suits repacking, yoghurt and bakery. Recombined UHT milk needs an extra grade with stricter solubility and bacterial limits. State your use in the enquiry and we quote the right grade.
What is the difference between SMP and fat filled milk powder?
SMP contains only milk solids. Fat filled milk powder (FFMP) is skimmed milk powder with added vegetable fat, cheaper per tonne and used for sachets and recombined milk where the label allows it.
How many tonnes fit in one container?
About 16 to 18 t in a 20ft and 24 to 25 t in a 40ft, in 25 kg bags. The exact tonnage and load plan are stated in each offer.
What shelf life do you guarantee?
12 or 24 months from production, depending on the dairy. The 24-month version is the most requested because it leaves more time for transit, stock and resale.
Which documents come with each shipment?
Health certificate, certificate of analysis for each lot, certificate of origin and the full commercial set. Halal certificate on request.
Do you also supply big bags?
Yes. Besides 25 kg paper bags, SMP is available in 1,000 kg big bags for industrial users; the tonnage per container is stated in the offer.
What is the import duty in ECOWAS?
Milk powder in bags of 25 kg and more falls under CET line 0402.10.10.00, with a 5% duty before levies. An increase is under discussion; check the rate in force with your forwarder.
How is the order confirmed?
The order is confirmed in the contract and proforma invoice.
