What you are buying

  • The fish: Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), whole round, not gutted. It is an oily fish, sold whole in West African markets and often smoked or fried after thawing.
  • Size grades: 150–200 g, 200–300 g, 300 g and above. The grade is set in the offer.
  • Freezing: block frozen. One 20 kg block, or two or three 10 kg blocks per carton.
  • What to check: glazing (net weight), catch period, fat content and stomach filling. They change with the season: ask for them, they are stated in each offer.
  • Shawa, titus, kote: in Nigeria, "shawa" means herring, "titus" mackerel and "kote" horse mackerel. To avoid any mix-up, our offers always give the species and its Latin name.
